SWIMMING PROSPECTUS

 

AquaEd is Stevenage Leisure Limited’s recognised brand for quality swimming lessons, delivering swimming lessons through the Amateur Swimming Association’s National Plan for Teaching Swimming. All of our teachers are ASA qualified and regularly attend up-to-date courses to improve standards. Listed below are the classes we offer at Saxon Pool & Leisure Centre:

 

*Ages are based on the age of the child on the first day of the swimming term. This rule has to be adhered to.

 

Beginner Classes

Adult and Child (12months – 3 Years)

A Child can begin their swimming career at Saxon Pool & Leisure Centre by taking part in Adult & Child classes, in which the teacher will guide the parent to help their child gain water confidence and basic water skills. Toys are used to encourage enjoyment. Within the Adult & child classes the swimmer has the opportunity to gain “Duckling Awards” which are recognised as part of the Amateur Swimming Associations National Plan for Teaching Swimming.

Pre School 1 (3 – 4 Years)

Developing basic safety awareness, the “class” scenario, basic movement skills and water confidence skills. Swimmers may use aids, e.g. Floats, Woggles and Tummy Bands.

Pre School 2 (3 – 4 Years)

Developing safe entries to the water, including jumping in, basic floating, travel front and back up to a distance of 5 metres, plus rotation to regain upright positions.

Stage 1 (4 Years +)

Developing basic safety awareness, the “class” scenario, basic movement skills and water confidence skills. Swimmers may use aids, e.g. Floats, Woggles and Tummy Bands.


Stage 2 (4 Years +)

Developing safe entries to the water, including jumping in, basic floating, travel front and back up to a distance of 5 metres, plus rotation to regain upright positions.


Improver Classes

Stage 3

Developing safe entries including submersion, swim up to 10metres on the front and back, progress rotation skills and water safety knowledge.

Stage 4

Developing the understanding of buoyancy through range of skills, refining kicking technique for all strokes and swimming 10 metres to a given standard as directed by the ASA.

Stage 5

Developing “waterman-ship” through sculling and treading water skills and complete rotation, also performing all strokes for a distance of 10 metres to the given standard as provided by the ASA within the NPTS resources.

Stage 6

Developing effective swimming skills including co-ordinated breathing across all strokes plus swimming a distance of 25metres using a stroke of the Swimmers choice; developing the water safety aspects and understanding of preparation of exercise

Stage 7

Developing quality stroke technique up to 100metres, incorporating skills learnt and combining them to develop a linked routine and complete successfully an obstacle course that combines a variety of skills accomplished throughout stages 1 – 7.


Advanced Classes


Once the Swimmer has developed the core range of skills required to be confident, competent and safe in the water through stages 1 – 7 the Swimmer may then have the choice to take part in different aquatic disciplines.

Stages 8, 9 & 10 - Competitive

Developing Competitive swimming skills for example starts, turns, pacing, speed and stamina.

Stages 8, 9 & 10- Rookie Lifeguard

Rookie Lifeguard teaches basic lifesaving skills (for example what to do in an emergency both pool based and dry side.), Basic CPR skills, and Basic First Aid skills. Also teaches them Water safety and personal survival skills.

In order to take part in competitive swimming and rookie lifeguard you must of completed Stage 7.
